Where the Statues Tell Stories

Imagine stepping into the heart of Bangalore, where the chatter of the city fades and the rustle of rain trees welcomes you. This is Cubbon Park – more than just a green escape, it is a living museum of history, politics, and culture. Our 2-hour guided walk through this iconic space takes you on a journey across centuries, where colonial powers, visionary rulers, and democratic ideals meet under the shade of towering trees.

Statues tell stories

Our walk begins with statues that quietly stand guard in the park, each one with a story to tell. As you pause before the statue of Queen Victoria, your guide paints a picture of Bangalore under the British Raj – a city where pomp, processions, and colonial grandeur once reigned. A few steps away, Sir Mark Cubbon, the British Commissioner after whom the park is named, emerges from history. Through anecdotes, you’ll discover how this administrator shaped Bangalore’s layout and laws, unknowingly lending his name to a park that is now loved by generations of locals. But the narrative is not just colonial. Standing tall is Sri Chamarajendra Wadiyar, the enlightened ruler of Mysore, who believed in modern education and the arts. His presence reminds us that Bangalore’s story has always been a blend of Indian royalty and foreign power – two forces that shaped the city’s character

State Central Library

As the tree-lined path opens, a striking red building catches your eye – the Sheshadri Iyer Memorial Hall, home to the State Central Library. Its Gothic architecture, with arched windows and regal presence, makes it look like a palace rather than a library. Inside lie over 300,000 books, rare manuscripts, and Kannada literary treasures. Your guide shares tales of Sir Sheshadri Iyer, the visionary Dewan of Mysore who believed in progress and modernization. Even today, students flock here during exams – a timeless tradition that connects past and present. Stepping inside feels like walking into a hall where knowledge itself is worshipped.

18 offices of power

Crossing a short distance, another red-brick giant rises into view – the Attara Kacheri, or “Eighteen Offices.” Built in 1868, this was once the bustling center of colonial administration, housing 18 different departments. Today, it is the High Court of Karnataka, where justice continues to echo within its walls. Your guide recounts tales of courtroom dramas, early colonial cases, and how the law evolved with India’s changing destiny. Standing here, facing the building, you feel the weight of history – this was where rulers and administrators once decided the future of Mysore and Bangalore. The High Court will be seen from the outside.

Vidhan Soudha

As you turn towards the avenue, your gaze is pulled to the other side – and there it stands, majestic and awe-inspiring: the Vidhana Soudha. Built in 1956, this is India’s largest legislative building, a marvel of Neo-Dravidian architecture with granite pillars and soaring domes. Your guide tells you how Kengal Hanumanthaiah, then Chief Minister of Mysore, envisioned it as a proud Indian monument – a response to the colonial-era Attara Kacheri across the road. While one building represents the era of colonial law, the other proclaims the voice of independent India. The motto inscribed here, “Government Work is God’s Work”, captures the spirit of a young democracy. Vidhan Soudha will be seen from the outside.
